Turning back…….. I SAW MY FIRST LOVE……
Me: Mariam??
Mariam: yes…. Have we met before??
I was shocked after hearing her say that,
this was the same girl that once wrote a 3
paged letter explaining in details how she
felt about me……
Me: (Staring down at myself) Have I really
changed that much since we last saw each
other?? I know it’s been 7 years but I still
recognized u instantly…
Mariam: (looking so confused) I’m really
confused right now…. pls where do u know
me from??
Me: (Removed my face cap and
sunglasses) it’s me “emou Kardia” (it
means my heart in Greek).
Mariam: (Screaming) OH MY GOD!!!!!!
She hugged with so much passion, catching
me unawares and making me lose balance
almost falling over. That was when I
realized how much she’s changed. making
me remember how we met…
#FLASHBACK
I spent the earlier part of my teenage years
in Lagos state. From my primary school till
junior secondary school before I relocated
back to Osun with my family.
After my primary school, I was enrolled into
a public school for my Jss education but I
lasted just a session as I couldn’t cope with
the pressure and drastic distraction.
At the start of a new session I enrolled into
a new school this time a private school. I
started school and I was introduced to my
new classmates which Mariam happened to
be amongst. The next day we were to be
arranged into seats by our class teacher in
the order of a boy and a girl on a 2 co-
joined sitting space. We were just 18 in
class at the time, 10 girls 8 boys and I was
eventually paired with Mariam.
The first 2 weeks we seated together, we
barely made conversation with one another
and being the shy guy that I was I just kept
to myself. On the 3rd week came the first
Ca test of the term and that was the
defining moment for both of us as I realized
how brilliant she was, scripts were released
and the whole class were surprised to see
someone finally challenging Mariam’s
dominance in class as I topped in 8
subjects to her own 6. I was later told she
was awarded the best student in every
single subject in their Jss1.
That was how the girl I’ve been drooling of
since my first day in school became my
biggest rival, or so I thought…
BACK TO PRESENT DAY
Mariam: (Looking at me with surprise)
Woow… you’ve changed a lot Habeeb, u are
now all beards and so tall (actually just
5ft11).
Me: I can say the same dear… How ve u
been?? u just went off grid like that and
failed to reach out to me, it’s not fair o.
Mariam: I’m sorry….. but I can say the
same u know, u failed to reach out too.
Me: u think so??
I went on to explain how I kept searching
for her name on Facebook all to no avail…
That was when she told me her name on
Facebook was customized (God punish the
idiot that invented costumizing names.
Imagine searching for a long time friend
with the name Ayodele Femi without u
knowing he’s now HAYORDHELE PHEMMY,
what nonsense.)
After some minutes we were told to come
back the next day to get the bank draft
signed. I left with Mariam and we kept
chatting on the way, she was staying with
an aunt in Ilorin before she gets an hostel
to stay and we decided to see the next day.
We exchanged number before seeing her
off as she took a bike to Idofian where
she’ll take a cab to Ilorin…. TBC.
